Solar at the top of the GB list
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Friday directed the relevant authorities to ensure the timely completion of development projects in Gilgit-Baltistan (GB), including the 100MW Solar Power Project Dawn.
The premier gave the directives while presiding over a meeting to review progress on development projects in GB, which was also attended by Chief Minister GB Amjad Hussain Dawn. In the words of the official statement:
“The prime minister directed the earliest possible completion of the 100-megawatt solar power project launched by the federal government for the people of Gilgit-Baltistan.” — official statement, via Dawn
What the review covered
The meeting was presented with a report by a committee established in July 2026 on the prime minister’s directives, which reviewed the status of ongoing federal development projects in GB, the obstacles hindering their implementation and the measures required to ensure their timely completion Dawn. The meeting also discussed completion of the Naltar Power Project, strengthening counterterrorism capabilities and the installation of digital infrastructure in the region Dawn.
The prime minister directed the relevant ministries and departments to accelerate work on ongoing development projects in GB and ensure the timely provision of the funds required for their completion Dawn.

Why the timing matters
The review comes a day before November 1, the historic day marking GB’s liberation from Dogra rule and subsequent accession to Pakistan, which the prime minister is expected to mark with a visit to the region Dawn. For a mountainous region whose settlements face long winters and fragile grid connections, a 100MW solar plant is not a ceremonial project — it is basic energy security. The test of Friday’s directive will be whether the committee’s identified obstacles, funding first among them, actually move faster from here.
