Two months from now, the biggest Marvel event in seven years hits theaters, and its biggest star is playing the villain. Avengers: Doomsday arrives December 18, 2026, with Robert Downey Jr. returning to the MCU — not as Iron Man, but as Doctor Doom.

The return nobody expected

When Marvel revealed at Comic-Con 2024 that Downey would return as Doctor Doom, it stunned fans still mourning Tony Stark’s death in Endgame. Marvel has confirmed his character is Victor von Doom, a new character — not a Tony Stark variant. Downey himself framed it as a creative swing: Marvel loves a challenge, and the role is meant to give the next mega-crossover its own identity.

A villain built like Thanos

Downey has compared Doomsday’s approach to how Marvel introduced Thanos in Infinity War: gradually revealing layers of the character rather than front-loading everything. He calls Doomsday an introduction to Doom’s story, designed to reward longtime comic readers while staying accessible to newcomers.

Three universes, one collision

The film brings together the Avengers, the Fantastic Four (Pedro Pascal as Mr. Fantastic, Vanessa Kirby as Sue Storm), the X-Men, the Wakandans and the New Avengers. Chris Hemsworth returns as Thor, Anthony Mackie continues as Captain America, and Chris Evans is back as Steve Rogers. Marvel’s official setup: heroes from three distinct universes headed for a deadly collision.

Why the cast says brace yourself

Sebastian Stan, back as Bucky Barnes, told Decider he expects the film to be ‘probably heartbreaking’ — though he admits he has not seen the finished movie and confirmed nothing about who survives. Director Anthony Russo says audiences arrive with deep emotional connection to the MCU, and the film aims to honour that investment and take it somewhere new.

What to watch before December 18

December 18 is close. If the cast is right, bring tissues.
